As well as potentially life saving, John’s system is a darn good way to grow things in a small garden or on a patio. It also avoids any digging at all. Better start drinking milk, hadn’t you?

Take an empty milk carton. The 6 pint
ones are probably best for most crops,
although you can use any size.

Cut a flap off the bottom, and keep it
slightly attached. This will act as a
shade or greenhouse for the young
plant. Also, keep the lid of the milk
carton, as this can be tightened or
loosened to control drainage. Do this
to as many milk cartons as you
need plants.

Thread the empty milk cartons upside
down on to the piece of wood (John
suggests using a palette, as they’re
cheap, plentiful and the right size),
through the hole from the handles.
