Talent sprouts When you hear the words “just add water”, “quick” and “easy” in relation to food, the words “nutritious” isn’t one you’d also expect to hear. But when that water is being added to beans and seeds, it’s one of the most nutritious things you can eat. Seeds and beans are packed with vitamins, enzymes and proteins anyway, and when you add water and let them sprout, the goodness in them increases, and is easier for your body to absorb. How magic is that? So how do you go about making them sprout? Well, it is literally as easy as “just add water”. If you were to leave the beans in water for a couple of days, they will sprout. However, there are ways of making it more likely to succeed and get the best crop you can from the beans or seeds. The three elements to remember are: water, air and drainage.

Sprouts need a fair amount of water to sprout, like any plant. Keep them damp. Also, they need to be rinsed liberally at least once a day, if not twice. However, you don’t want them to rot. They need have air getting to them at some point, whether by rinsing, having space in the container they are growing in, or having some sort of air holes. The basic way to sprout is to take some beans or seeds. Inspect them for manky looking ones and stones etc. Rinse beans/seeds. Soak seeds in warm water for the length of time specified below. Rinse seed, and put where you are going to sprout for the time specified. Rinse once or twice a day until sprouted to the size you want. Rinse before use.
